More details about our programs:

The mission of the Randy Roberts Foundation is to cultivate Florida’s future leaders through promoting civic engagement, public service initiatives, and providing resources to students excelling in those areas. Since 2011, the Civic Scholars program has engaged hundreds of high school students in democracy, providing them firsthand experience and insight into government actions at the local, state, and national levels.

The Randy Roberts Foundation offers an exceptional civic engagement program for Polk County, Florida, high school juniors. At the start of the fall semester, applications open for our Community Classroom. If selected, students begin a transformative year-long journey.

In the fall, students selected for Community Classroom begin their journey with immersive local government workshops at Lakeland City Hall, where they learn directly from elected officials and county leaders about local politics and civics. To conclude the day's activities, students participate in interviews with a selection committee comprised of accomplished professionals with expertise in government, education, and community leadership. These interviews help determine which students will be invited to continue on to the Capitol Classroom program. Those selected are notified in January and travel to Tallahassee in the spring for the Capital Classroom program.

At the state capital, Civic Scholars will engage with state leaders and officials, deepening their understanding of civic engagement at the state level. Finally, in the fall of their senior year, a select group from the Capital Classroom cohort advances to the Congressional Classroom in Washington, D.C. Here, they complete their civic learning journey by meeting with U.S. legislators, lobbyists, and officials, gaining firsthand insight into national government.

Throughout each tier of the program, students develop essential soft skills, build powerful networks, and gain invaluable hands-on experience in leadership and civic engagement.

What Civic Scholars can expect:

Each August, Polk County high school juniors are invited to apply for the Randy Roberts Foundation's Community Classroom program. This unique opportunity is designed for students who are passionate about civic engagement, eager to learn, and committed to making a difference in their community.

The application, available on our website and distributed to Polk County high schools, is open for one month. We encourage students to showcase their authentic selves and highlight their enthusiasm for civic involvement. Successful applicants demonstrate a genuine interest in learning about government, a strong commitment to public service, and a deep appreciation for the transformative potential of this program.

Following the Community Classroom program, a select group of students is invited to participate in the Capital Classroom program. Selection is based on interviews that assess students' commitment to ongoing learning and their understanding of civic engagement as a multifaceted practice.

We seek students who demonstrate a genuine appreciation for the complexities of civic life, recognizing that it extends beyond politics to encompass active listening, respectful dialogue, and collaboration with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Ideal candidates exhibit strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, courtesy, and a deep respect for others.

The Capital Classroom program provides a unique opportunity for these students to further develop their civic leadership potential and deepen their understanding of the importance of ethical engagement in their communities.

The pinnacle of the Randy Roberts Foundation Civic Scholars program is the Congressional Classroom, offered to the Polk County students who have successfully completed the Community Classroom and Capitol Classroom programs.

In the fall of their senior year, these students embark on a journey to Washington D.C., where they gain an unparalleled, behind-the-scenes look at our nation's capital. The Congressional Classroom experience transcends the traditional understanding of civics, highlighting the diverse range of individuals who contribute to the functioning of our government.

Students meet with influential civic leaders, passionate lobbyists, dedicated grassroots organizers, and experienced congressional staff. These encounters provide a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the multifaceted nature of public service, showcasing the various pathways through which individuals can make a difference.

The Congressional Classroom leaves a lasting impression on participants, inspiring many to pursue careers in public service and contribute to our country in unique and meaningful ways. It is an experience that solidifies their commitment to civic engagement and empowers them to become active and informed citizens.
